Children's Programs at Stewart's Caring Place

Children's & Family Programming

Cancer affects the entire family unit: spouses, siblings, parents, extended family members, friends and children! That's why we, at Stewart's Caring Place, strive to help this population during the cancer journey. Children and adolescents often endure stress (emotionally, physically, and socially) when a family member is diagnosed with cancer.

Sarah Tower , MS, CCLS, our Children's Program Director, offers individual sessions with the children and teenagers along with individual parent/caregiver sessions and family consults. These consults provide an opportunity for children and adults to ask questions, share their stories, and receive therapeutic services such as medical play and therapeutic art, music, and writing techniques.

A wide variety of support groups and family activities are also offered: Kid's Support Group, Children's Bereavement Support Group, Kid's Relaxation Group, Family Art Class, PJ parties, Summer Day Camp, and Family Movie Night. Below, you'll find detailed descriptions of the currents groups and events we offer for children and families.

Family Art Class
CALLING ALL ARTISTS!!! Stewart's Caring Place would like to decorate our walls with work by our favorite artists - YOU! Children (ages 4+) and their families are encouraged to come and share their creativity through therapeutic art projects and activities. SCP Children's Program Director, Sarah Tower, will lead the group through a fun family hour! Materials will be provided. Group meets the first Wednesday in August and September from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

Family Time Consults
SCP Children's Program Director, Sarah Tower, is available to meet with parents, children and other family members to discuss issues and concerns related to the cancer experience. Call for an appointment.

Kid's Bereavement Support Group
An ongoing support group for children (ages 6-12) who have lost a loved one to cancer. Facilitated by SCP Children's Program Director, Sarah Tower. Group meets the first Thursday of each month from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Pre-registration is required.

Kid's Support Group
An ongoing support group for children (ages 6-12) who have been touched by cancer. Facilitated by SCP Children's Program Director, Sarah Tower. Group meets second Tuesday of each month from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Pre-registration is required.

Kid's Relaxation Group
Children (ages 5-12) are invited to learn and practice a variety of relaxation, meditation and visual imagery practices to increase coping and practice healthy stress reduction techniques. Facilitated by SCP Children's Program Director, Sarah Tower. Groups meets the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Pre-registration is required.

Family Movie Night
Join us for a fun and relaxing way to start off the weekend! On Friday, September 12th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, Stewart's Caring Place will show a family blockbuster hit and provide yummy theater treats, as well as a family activity or craft afterwards. Bring your favorite pillows and blankets to get extra comfy! Sarah Tower, Children's Program Director has a special evening planned for you! Reservations are required by calling Sarah at 330.836.1772.

Kid's PJ Party
Bring your children (ages 6-12) for therapeutic evening with the staff and volunteers of Stewart's Caring Place! It's your turn to relax or go out for an evening, while we provide your children with dinner, therapeutic activities, songs, crafts and a FUN evening! Bring your children dressed in their pajamas and slippers! A favorite stuffed animal is always welcome. Join us on Friday, August 15th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Reservations are required by calling Sarah at 330.836.1772.
