The mission of Stewart's Caring Place is to provide a caring environment of healing and support for individuals and families touched by cancer that:
The vision of Stewart's Caring Place is to be the recognized resource for non-medical cancer support services for our community.
Stewart's Caring Place began as a grassroots effort led by the family and friends of Dr. Stewart Surloff whose cancer journey ended in the fall of 2001. During his life, Stewart shared the struggles and triumphs of his cancer experience and taught us that "There is more to cancer than chemotherapy and surgery." Stewart's Caring Place carries on his legacy of hope and healing.
Stewart's Caring Place was incorporated on June 3, 2003 and received its not-for-profit status on October 8, 2003. The founding group and its supporters quickly grew over the next year. The new nonprofit also hired its first staff: an Executive Director and part-time Office Assistant.
Stewart's Caring Place opened the doors of its beautiful facility in October 2004. All facility refurbishment and furnishings were donated by area businesses and individuals. The part-time Office Assistant became a full-time Office Manager and the Program Director position was added. The Program Director compiled an extraordinary variety of educational, counseling and healing arts programs right from the first day of operation, which were led by highly trained and certified volunteer instructors and practitioners.
David Miller, a participant, summarizes the atmosphere right from the beginning at Stewart's Caring Place. "Stewart's Caring Place is a gift and a joy, a place where souls touch in moments of sharing."
In 2005, Stewart's Caring Place expanded its program capabilities by the addition of a Medical Resource Librarian and a full-time Counselor. In 2006, a Development Director and a part-time Bookkeeper were added to the staff.
