Joe Hinkle, President, KeyBank
Joe Hinkle, CPA, CFA has been with KeyBank since 1998 and is currently a Portfolio Manager. Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a Master’s in Taxation from the University of Akron. He is a member of the Ohio Society of CPAs, CFA Institute and CFA Society of Cleveland and an active board member of St. Joseph Catholic School.
Brenda Spear, President Elect Chamberlain College of Nursing
Brenda Spear, DNP, RN, CNS, NEA-BC has been with Chamberlain University, School of Nursing at the Cleveland campus since 2013 and currently is the Campus President. Previously she held positions in nursing administration for over 27 years at Summa Health System and Cleveland Clinic. At present, she serves on the University Hospitals Board of Directors and Vice Chair of the board at Parma Medical Center Regional hospital. She received her Bachelors in the Science of Nursing at Medical College of Ohio and her Masters in the Science of Nursing at Phoenix University. Recently, she earned her Doctorate in Nursing at Chamberlain University. She and her husband Kevin reside in Bath, Ohio and have three sons- Ryan, Justin, and Brandon as well as a golden doodle named Finn. Her favorite time is with family, time, long walks, travel, and fun with friends.
Cathy Cole, Treasurer Sherwin Williams (Retired)
Cathy L. Cole, CIH, CSP has over 35 years of Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Environmental experience in settings that have included manufacturing, NASA, commercial laboratories and professional associations. Cathy retired from The Sherwin-Williams Company in 2019 after 17 years of service. Cathy holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Akron, and a masters’ degree in Public Health from Tulane University, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Cathy joined the board of Stewart’s Caring Place in 2014 and has served on the Governance Committee and as President in 2018. She enjoys golfing with her husband David, gardening and spending time with her family.
Harrison Cummins, Secretary, Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute
Harrison joined Stewart’s Caring Place’s Board of Directors in 2019. He was previously a staff member at Stewart’s as the Marketing & Public Relations Coordinator and is currently a Program Manager at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute. Harrison is native of Northeast Ohio, and lives in Macedonia with his wife Monica who is a nurse at Cleveland Clinic. They both enjoy exploring volunteer opportunities throughout the Greater Akron/Cleveland area, spending time outdoors and training their dog Luna.
Donna Skoda, Immediate Past President, Summit County Public Health
Donna Skoda, MS., RD., L.D. has held the role of Health Commissioner for Summit County Public Health since July 1, 2015. She serves on the boards of Summit 2020: A Quality of Life Project for the Social Services and Open-M. She is a registered, licensed dietitian with a Master’s degree in Public Health and Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. She has worked in community based public health programs for over 30 years.
Mimi Surloff, Founder – Caring for Kids, Inc. (Retired)
Mimi Surloff, LISW-S, retired from the social work profession in 2015 after 38 years in a variety of child welfare positions. Her last position was that of Coordinator of the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Program at Caring for Kids. In 2004, 3 years after her husband Stewart lost his 10 month battle with cancer, Mimi helped found Stewart’s Caring Place as a legacy to Stewart. Founded on the belief that there is more to cancer than chemo and radiation, Stewart’s Caring place fulfilled Stewart’s vision to have a non-medical support center for cancer patients and their families to find comfort and free of charge services. Mimi served as SCP’s first board president and is currently an honorary Board Member. Mimi also serves as a committee member and volunteer at SCP.
Todd Bertsch, Evolve Marketing
Todd is the owner and president of Evolve Marketing which launched in 2009. Todd grew up in the East-Akron Goodyear Heights neighborhood, graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School and achieved a BFA in graphic design from the University of Akron. Todd is highly involved in the community and currently sits on Akron Urban Leagues’ board of directors. He and his wife reside in Copley with their two children.
John Borstein, JNB Fine Jewelry, LTD
John is the President of JNB Fine Jewelry, LTD., an online jewelry seller. Previously, he was the co-owner of Volk’s Jewelry in downtown Cleveland for 25 years. John is a past-president and longtime member of Temple Beth Shalom in Hudson. John is a workout regular at Akron General Lifestyles in Bath and volunteer for the Akron Marathon. He has 2 adult son’s Brian and Josh (Lindsey) and grandson Elliott (born in 2020). He and his significant other, Karen, love to hike, travel and cruise.
Frank Colella, Cleveland Clinic Akron General
Shelby Detrick, The Lippman School
Shelby is a Kindergarten teacher at The Lippman School, in Akron, where she has been teaching for 11 years. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Miami University and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Cincinnati. Shelby resides in Richfield with her husband, son, and daughter. She enjoys traveling, tennis, spending time outdoors, and being with friends and family. Shelby is the daughter of Mimi and Stewart Surloff and is proud to serve on the SCP Board in memory of her late father.
Evelyn DiBello, University Hospitals (Retired)
Evelyn worked at Stewart’s Caring Place in the organization’s early days as the Director of Development before joining the Stewart’s Board of Directors in 2018. She was passionate about getting involved at Stewart’s after her own experience of losing a daughter to cancer. After eight years of service as the Senior Development Officer at University Hospitals, she retired at the end of 2020. Evelyn earned both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees at The University of Akron. She and her partner Larry enjoy walking, biking and drinking wine. Between them, they have 11 grandchildren.
Dr. Stacey Ehrenberg, Cleveland Clinic Foundation
Stacey has been volunteering with Stewart’s Caring Place since its inception and is excited to be on the board of an organization that has given so much back to the community. Stacey grew up in Akron and graduated from Copley High School. She received her undergraduate degree from The University of Michigan and her medical degree from The University of Toledo College of Medicine. Stacey is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and takes care of women with high risk pregnancies. She resides in Cleveland with her husband and three children. She enjoys watching sporting events with her family, traveling, reading and crocheting..
Richard Fry III, Buckingham Doolittle Burroughs
Richard is a partner with Buckingham. His practice is focused on state and local tax compliance and controversies, including Ohio and multistate sales/use tax, commercial activity tax, and personal income tax issues. Richard is a member of the Ohio Tax Club, Ohio State, Akron, and American Bar Associations. He currently sits on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Western Reserve and is a member of the 2020 Leadership of Akron Class 37.
Grace Ho, The Timken Company
Grace joined the board of Stewart’s Caring Place in 2017 and serves on the Governance Committee. Grace is a senior corporate attorney at The Timken Company, providing legal counsel in the areas of corporate and commercial law. Prior to joining Timken in 2004, Grace lived and worked in Australia and Singapore. Grace currently lives in the Akron area with her husband and daughter.
Vincent Marchetta, WAVE Ventures, LLC
Vince is owner of WAVE Ventures, LLC, a real estate investment company. As active proponents of Stewart’s Caring Place, he and his late wife, Betsy, have actively participated in many aspects of advocating for the organization. When Betsy was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, the entire family learned firsthand how beneficial and essential SCP is, not only personally, but to the entire community. Since Betsy’s passing in August 2019, Vince remains active with SCP. He serves as a Legislative Ambassador for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Vince also sits on ETC Heid’s School of Musical Arts Board of Trustees as President. Vince resides in Akron and enjoys spending time with his children Amanda and William.
Gilbert D. A. Padula MD, University Hospitals
Dr. Gil Padula is a Michigan native and a practicing radiation oncologist. He currently serves as Professor and Associate Chair at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Having had a father afflicted with cancer, he knows first hand the value and importance of cancer supportive services in the overall care of cancer patients and their families. In fact, he is currently co-leading a national clinical trial testing the use of survivorship care plans for patients having survived prostate cancer. Dr. Padula was drawn to Stewart’s Caring Place because of its healing mission and the tremendous services provided to the community. He is the proud father of three teenage children, Isabella, Nino, and Gabriella.
Tom Sims, FirstEnergy, Corp.
Tom has been with FirstEnergy, Corp. since 1991 and currently serves as Consultant-Credit Risk. Tom received a B.S. in accounting and an MBA in finance both from the University in Akron. Tom serves as Board Treasurer for Child Guidance & Family Solutions and lives in Tallmadge with his wife Rhonda.
